Help an old gamer pick his first gaming laptop (notebook)

I'm starting grad school in computer science and I think my old desktop needs to be donated to my parents and I need a nice laptop to use at school, home and at the bar.

I'm a gamer so I want a large screen and fast video card/processor; my budget is under $1,000.

This acer at Newegg looks nice 18" screen, fast video card for under $800.

This Toshiba also looks like a nice value but it's $100 more than the Acer.

Any other recommendations.

1000$ for "highend" games with a laptop is a bit hard, good CPU + decent GFX is expensive, but the last one is pretty decent in my opinion anyway

That Sony is a nice looking unit but with a smaller screen and $200 is it that much better than the Acer?
