1. Make sure your HDD is plugged in
2. Have you installed windows yet? You will need to have the disk in when you boot up.

yes the HDD is plugged in and windows is not installed yet. I decided to put the six boot disks in and its taking them right now. Is that the disk your talking about or are you talking about the XP cd?

Thanks helmie

well if you dont have an operating system on the computer ofcourse the computer isn't gonna boot up. Put your Windows XP cd in and boot from that, then follow the instructions and install window.

I guess I use the term boot too loosly. I have the XP cd in and it does nothing. The only way I can get past which I posted originally post is to insert the six win xp pro setup disks i have. The firs time I did this I got to the point where it asks if I would like to install win xp pro and I said yes but I could not get my CD tray open. So I restarted and did the six disks again and then said I would like to install win xp pro but then it said I had no CD rom in my computer. So im stuck again. Any Ideas?

Thanks again

no boot

what other hardware do you have? take out any additional hardrives and cdroms. have 1 hardrive on the primary and one cd on the secondary, set both to master.

all I have for hardware is a hard drive, dvd burner, and video card and I have both drives set to master.

I tried this...switched cd rom with old comp and reinstalled the startup disks and was able to say yes to installinf the operating system. I put the XP prof. cd in the drive and hit enter. Then it said that the cd was damaged which I find hard to believe but I guess I will have to make a copy of it and try again.

Thanks

Ok, steps to do:

1. Set DVD/CD Drive to boot first in the BIOS.
2. Clean the disk well, sometimes a dirty disk can effect the installation.
3. As soon as you press the power button, put in the XP Installation CD.
4. It should come up with "Press any key to boot from CD" or something like that.
5. Then follow the instructions.

EDIT: You dont need the 6 floppy boot disks, just use the guide above.

are you sure you have both the IDE and power connectors plugged into your cd drive, does it open at any other times?

It turned out that both drives (CD and HDD) needed to be connected on the primary IDE cable apparently because it was looking for a master if I had it on slave and vice versa. Not as I had it, both on separate IDE cables.

Thanks
