Help, cannot access my files

Hi all,
I recently had to send my laptop away for repair. It is a toshiba a100 satellite operating windows XP.

When i got it back my account had been reset, like I was a new user. I couldnt find any of my files or settings, documents, programs etc.

I searched through the computer and found my old profile folder in the documents and settings folder.
I tried to open the folder and it said access is denied. When I hover the mouse over the folder it says folder is empty.
I tried to use system restore to bring back my old profile but it didnt work.

I decided that the files were gone so said from now on I would backup my old filesto my external hard drive. When doing this, I was asked what files i wanted to backup. I decided to see if i could find my old folders this way, and I could. I was able to open my old documents folder and browse the contents. All my files are there.

So why can i not access them???

I used backup to create a backup of all my old files and then restored them to my new profile folder. But when I tried to open them it still said access denied.

I am the computer administrator. There were three user accounts on the computer. My account (administrator) was called gaz and was password protected. My girlfriends account was ordinary user (ie not administrator) and was not password protested. There was a guest account also, which had no password.

When I got the computer back and logged on as gaz I found everything back to default like I was a new user. The password and account name are still the same. The other accounts are still the same as they were and all files are present and accessable.

When I open C/documents and settings my new account has its folders under the heading:
C/documents and settings/gaz.gd2007
gd.2007 is the computer name. I know the password for the computer if this helps.

My old folders are located here:
C/documents and settings/gaz.

Any idea what happened here?

I asked the repair shop about it and they didnt want to know.

Your help is much appreciated. I really need those old files.

Cheers Y'all

G
