like the title says, I need some assistance finding a high end laptop.

My budget is $2500-3000 on the top end.

needs:

i7 720 or better
8 gig ram or more, preferably high speed ram
it MUST have a 6-pin firewire (or some way to get power via firewire)
HDMI output compatible with one screen. multiple is ok, just has to work with a single screen
win 7 pro

doesn't need:
Long battery life
big screen

I plan to do a lot of multi-tasking with programs that take up a good amount of memory, and I want something that won't be obselete in a year or two.

I like:

lenovo thinkpad w510 - customized at $2559
sager np9280at $2679
sony vaio f series at $2200 or so.
some asus ones

the only problem IS. . . None of them have 6-pin firewire!
anybody have suggestions?

Go with the sager NP9285 and upgrade the video card to gtx 480 and also upgrade the windows to win 7 pro and also use the thermal paste AS5 and then Upgrade the HDD the total will be $2919 and it will fullfill all your requirements with a really good Graphic card and will be perfect desktop replacement and excellent in multitasking

I personally never consider spending $2500 - 3000 on laptop.
GTX480m is the fastest single laptop GPU.

Have a look at $1700 ASUS G73JH A1 and it save a bit of money. Only down side is it only have win 7 preminum. May be get that and change 1 HDD to SSD + copy of Win 7 Pro??

Or have you consider Sager NP8690/Clevo W860CU? It have 5870/ GTX 285m. And if you getting i7 720, 8 GB RAM with Win 7 pro. It should be around $2000

However, I would expect desktop CPU would be more powerful.
