Help choosing laptop...for varied use.

Alright, so I'm going to college and I want a new laptop. Price is not the biggest issue, I have been working for a while so I have plenty to spend on a good one, plus I can get some from the rents if needed. What I am looking for is a laptop that provides good performance, and good battery time. I would like to use this laptop for day to day notes in classes, so it needs to last at least a couple of hours strong, and at the same time use it for gaming (fps like hl2 and bf2 and ut2004.

Comps I am considering:
Dell XPS Gen 2. I don't really think this is for me because it has such a short battery life (2 hours max?)...and is pretty heavy and bulky. But the reviews are raving performance wise.

Alienware area 51m 7700. I like this, but this has even SHORTER battery life than the XPS.

ABS Mayhem G4 or G5. I don't really know much about the battery life of this but they are supposed to be pretty good gaming computers. I really don't know all that much about these...

Voodoo a521 or n522. I'm really sorta hanging on these two..they claim good battery life and at the same time claim good processing. I would max whichever one I buy in terms of options, but I'm caught. This is where I think I might need help the most.
On one hand with the a521, I could get a pentium m mobile 765 at 2.1 GHz as the max, and with that go with mobility radeon 9700.
On the other hand, with the n522, I could get a pentium m 770 processor, and with that go with the standard (no choice apparently? though they claim it's supposed to use the 9700 the option isn't on the site?) NVIDIA Geforce 6600 Go.

As other random info, I am going to get 1gig of ram and i'm not sure about the hd yet. I don't admit to knowing much about comps in general, and even less about laptops, so any advice, even if it's totally different and offtopic from any of the stuff I asked is fine. Like a totally different computer. Oh, and Acer used to be on my list...then I realized you have to buy it through a retailer? I dunno...effort...eww...

If I were to get a performace laptop, I'd actually go with the Dell Inspiration. My friend has one that is VERY capable. Really the XPS isn't that much more powerful than the Inspiration, I beleive you can get the same GFX card in both. His has a FX6800GT in it if I remember correctly.

I agree, the Alienware would be nice, if you're willing to spend the extra money, but Dell laptops are superb. Much better comparatively even to their desktops in the overall market which are still excellent.

LOL, I knew it was something like that. I did a quick search on google and actually found quite a few sites saying inspiration. *shrugs* I think we all knew what I was trying to say :P

definately a dell laptop. i have 2 of them and i run cs 1.6 like its butter. not to mention they are really cheap. if you go under purchase for education you can get up to 12% more. hehe funny they dont tell you this on the website
