help: Firewire/1394 PCI cards

If this should be posted elsewhere, please let me know.

I wanted to install a 1394a adaptor card into my free PCI expansion slot (32 bit) so I can finally upload digital video to my computer. But there are so many choices. What features/specs should I be looking for? Are certain cards more compatible than others? Any recommendations?

Also, my cable box (motorola) has a firewire output jack. Do you think it's possible to connect my cable box to a firewire input on my computer and record television shows?

I don't know if there are good firewire cards and bad ones..My uncle got the cheapest one he could find ($5 in China) and it works perfectly.

As for your cable box, I'm not that sure, you should wait for someone else's reply on that.
 
As to the cable box, no. They are making many cable boxes with Firewire and USB ports for future connectivity. Right now they do nothing, and the only way to watch TV on your computer is through a TV tuner

hey, thanks for the replies.

but actually the manual for the cable box states that the USB port (output) is another option for connecting the box to your TV (the others are the DVI, the component jacks, the composite jacks, the coaxial, and there might even be an S-Video). it says that it (like the component jacks and the DVI) are capable of sending High-Def signals (right now we're using the component jacks to connect to the TV).

maybe you're right, though. i haven't been able to try the USB port out yet to confirm whether it actually works.

Hmmm...that sounds like a possibility. But when I was talking to the Verizon installation guy a month or so ago, he said that they don't use it for anything right now, but they had plans for it later. I guess it depends on the cable provider.
