My mums computer is her world, she cannot get out much and loves the fact she can talk to friends and family!

Her problem is that she can log on ok, but come approx 7 mins, the page says it cannot be fount go to internet options extra which we have done. The weird thing is the computer does not disconnect as she can still email and talk on msn, it;s just that she cannot surf. We have run windows defender and avg and it is not showing any bugs or nastys - i rang tiscali her broadband provider and they have said it's not a connection problem, they have advised me to ring dell (where we got the computer from 18months ago) and ask them to refresh the computers browser? does this any sense to anyone?

Thank you in advance

helping mum

Hello Guys

This is what happened when we installed fire fox............

 firefox cannot not establish connection at images.google.uk

 the site could be unavailable or too busy try again in a few moments (tired 3 times)

 if you are unable to load pages check your computer network connection

if your computer is protected by proxy firewall make sure it is permitted to access the web.

ahhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!

You might have to go to your control panel and go into the security settings and allow Firefox to get through the firewall. Are you using XP?

So you can use Internet Explorer for a short period of time and then it stops being able to connect to web pages?

Did you try un-installing Internet Explorer and then installing it again?

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/downloads/ie/getitnow.mspx

Download it from there before you un-install it, otherwise you won't have the internet to download it from :P

What about MSN Explorer, That may work is Messenger is working?

Could that be the problem, try putting an older version of IE back on, the one that she was using without any problems.

Download IE7 from the link I gave you, put it somewhere you can find it, like the Desktop and then un-install the one thats on now... reboot. Then install the one you downloaded. :)

It may work, it's worth a try.

Dell and Tiscali should get into a ring with each other! :P

tell me about it!!!!! Sorry to be a pest but the problem started way before we put IE 7 on. Is it still worth doing this process?

No, It's Ok.

Erm, I don't know, I guess it's worth a try, it'll only take a couple of minutes.

Have you tried MSN Explorer, that may work.

Usually ISP and DELL almost always point fingers at one another!
Hi Jordsbabe --

I recall having this type of problem before... I am thinking it might be Windows if none of the suggestions above doesn't work.

Sometimes, when a computer is running for long periods of time, and viruses, spyware, etc. gets into the computer and isn't completely cleaned out, over the long haul... I found in my experiences to backup everything she has that's important... like data files, word processing documents, spread sheets, financial records (i.e. Quicken or Money) pictures and music. Even e-mail - depending on how her mail is sorted.

Take the recovery CD's and re-install the OS. Delete, format the drive, and install again. Then, try connecting to the internet with IE or Firefox.

See if internet connections come back?!

Chances are that something in Windows XP is corrupted, from either over a long time where spy-ware or some other infection came in and caused the system to stop responding.

Although, dealing with Microsoft's bulletin board always helps too... but you have to established an account, usually a partner's account. I would inquire for you... but my schedule is a bit crazy at the moment. But, usually if you back up and re-install the OS it helps! At least things will be clear and fresh without any garbage holding the system back.

JMHO of course!:)

Try doing a system restore. If that doesn't work, go to a library with a blank cd and download firefox there, but don't install it, just copy the installer to the cd. Then have her install it at home.

mad they have already tried installing firefox, i would go about doing what buy it said, i had a very similar problem with a computer at my house, internet would quit, so i bought a new wireless router cuz i figured the old on broke cuz i had no internet on one of the wireless pcs we have and the laptop, well that fixed it for the laptop but not the pc, i reinstalled windows vuala works, prolly ur best bet

I had this problem once and reinstalling IE worked. It's worth a shot. You could also try reinstalling your wireless card driver (if you use wireless)

I too once had this problem, although I never found a reasonable solution to fix it. I gave up after 3 days and formatted, that worked :D *sigh*

Thank you ........

ok i have tried absolutely everything, apart from one thing!!!!! (no not the hammer!!!) I have a colleague at work who is going to have a look and see if it is a hijacker, because of the 7 minute thing it could be .......well you never know! I will keep you posted!!!!!!

Thank you everyone for your help so far!!!!!!!

Thank you ........

Just before i start deleting things, my colleague at work has suggested that he looks for a 'Hijacker' so i will keep you all informed. I still like the idea of installing the oc disc thing, but i had to pull my mum off the ceiling when i suggested it!!!!!:D
