OK I am on a learning curve, and the problems keep popping up. I am trying to transfer some info from My Documents on my old Windows 7, to my new Windows 8 using a USB memory stick. When I open the memory stick on Windows 8 I get all this gobbeldy gook.

Is there an easy way to convert it back to the original text of Windows 7?

Are these .doc files? I believe there was a change to Wordpad and how it handles .doc files. Try opening those files in MS Word or OpenOffice.

Thanks strollin, It's 10.30 pm over her in the bush, so I will get back to this tomorrow. Wifey will have to put her cheese and bacon scones off for a day.
Enjoy your day.

OK, I am not having any joy with this so far, and I can only see 2 options.

(A) Go back to my old Windows 7 and install Open office.
Then copy and paste all of the problem Docs and photos to the new Open Office. Then put them onto a memory stick then download them onto my new Windows 8.
OR

(B) Chuck my new Windows 8 in the rubbish bin and buy another Window7 while they are still available.

NOTE

(C) I would kill for a simple solution.

You never really answered my first question. What are you copying exactly? (Or should I say, what file format are they in?) You're probably opening whatever format they're in with the wrong program.

OK, Keep in mind I am a long way from being an expert.

I Right clicked one of these documents, then clicked Properties.
I then got, File type, WPS File (.wps)
Opens with, Word Pad Change
I clicked change and got a selection to choose from.

Keep using word pad
Adobe Reader
Note Pad
More Options

I tried those 3 and got the same result.
The beer fridge is looking good.

In addition to that I did the following.
I loaded the docs onto the memory stick then put it into my new Computer.
I went to Computer and selected the item and double clicked it, that is when all the letters, numbers and rubbish comes up.

WPS is a WordPerfect format. That's why none of those are opening correctly. OpenOffice doesn't open WordPerfect either, so you need to do one of two things:

1: Find a converter to convert WPS to .DOC or .RTF

2: Open them on the old computer in WordPerfect and save them as something else.
