Help! graphics card problem

Hi i recently purchased a new pc and when connecting my existing flat screen to in after the initial xp pro boot up the screen goes blank and a "out of timing" error is shown. does anyone know the reason y?? i connected up a old moniter and it worked fine.
The pc doesnt have a graphics card, but when i put in my old 64mb nVIDIA card the screen is just black so i cannot load the driver 4it.

anyone got any ideas?

When booting up your computer press (usually this key) F8 and choose to start up in Safe Mode. Then install drivers.
