Help! I hate my codecs, and apparently it's mutual!

My Mommy reinstalled Windows a while back (W98SE), and ever since she did that certain video/audio files play abnormally. wma, wmv, avi, and mpg files play really choppily (it will play about one third of a second normally, then skip ahead about 1.5 seconds, and do it again). I managed to determine that it's an audio problem (If I remove the audio drivers everything plays at normal speed. Same if I play a video file with no audio), but I don't know how to fix it. I've downloaded the latest drivers for her sound card, and I've downloaded the K-Lite codec pack v2.27 (latest version), but it still does this. I've also tried going into the multimedia settings (in the control panel) and removing all the audio playback decoders, then reinstalling the codec pack, but that didn't do anything (In fact, despite the lack of apparent playback decoders, it played audio/video files anyway ! I suspect there are more decoders hiding, but I don't know where).

Sorry for the lengthy description :o. If you can help at all it would be immensely appreciated. Thanks.

This is really a long story. I dont have any good idea, but comfort, somebody will come to your rescue sooner or later.

SUCCESS!!!
I figured it out! I finally figured it out! It's not a codec problem at all, but rather, an irritatingly persistent directsound issue! I just turned directsound acceleration all the way down! Finally, I win! Yay!
