Help! I think my harddrive just died...

What can I do? I have important stuff on that drive for work.

Is it really toast?

Heres the story.

Its a Western Digital 320 GB a few years old. It's been in a USB enclosure on top of my computer its whole life and I was just putting the door back on my computer when boom the drive shutdown. I didn't even touch the enclosure with the door so it was really weird that I was actually doing something to the computer when it happened. I haven't heard it making funny noises or anything lately. So i took the enclosure and i've tried plugging it into different USB ports and it just won't start.

Is there anything else I can do?

Should I try putting it inside the computer?

Did you hear a pop or see a spark? It's possible you maybe nudged the door against a wire inside the case enough to pull it out. I would remove the plug and press the power button to discharge any remaining juice, then check all your cables and wires for secure connections.

Oh heh, just realized it was external - my bad :P Check the data cable on the drive-side of the enclosure, and both ends of the plug.

try a different external enclosure.. I'd say stick it in a freezer for 2 hours if you heard noise but you said you did not so..dont do that =P

You can also try attaching that hard drive into the computer motherboard, and see if the motor spins up, or if there's a clicking sound upon drive start up.
