Ok, so I bought an Alienware several years ago and I want to upgrade the motherboard. The thing is my current motherboard is an alienware version of an intel D975XBX, and my XP disk is also an alienware version of XP. If im right in my assumption, I cannot reinstall XP from that disk if I buy a new motherboard, correct?

If so, can I get around this by not formating my hard drive?

I am also going to be upgrading to windows 7 next week, but I bought the upgrade version, so ill need to have XP installed.

You will have to reinstall windows and you won't be able to use your dell reinstallation cd. You will have to buy a new windows install cd. Sell your upgrade cd and buy the oem version.

Bummer!!!
Thanks johnb35. I have had zero problems with the motherboard that came with this computer. I guess I'll leave it alone.
Thank you again,
Rob

you don't always need to have xp installed to use a upgrade version of windows, sometimes when you install the upgrade it might just ask for your old key number to show that you have owned a previous copy of windows...
The upgrade is just like a full copy of windows but you just have to have a key number from your last version of windows.
