Help installing application file

Hi, So i recently have a dell latitude d620 from work and installed NOT the orginal copy of the dell cd but the windows xp cd itself that you buy for homebuilt computers. I am now trying to attempt to install the dell drivers for the laptop but it reads the file as an "application file" and wants me to choose what to open it with? Any ideas? Would i need to get the orginal cd that the laptop usually comes with to fix it? (Not my Laptop)

Where did you get his application file? It should open mormally if its an exe file unless the install went corrupt. Have you been able to install anything else that is an exe file?
