I need help. I inherited an HP pavilion laptop and used kill disk to clear the drive so I could reinstall everything fresh. When I boot windows from disk it says there is no hard drive installed. How can I install the hard drive without the OS? Please help me out here. Thanks so much for the help.

I take it this is a SATA hard drive and you're trying to install XP? If so you'll have to go into the BIOS and change the drive interface from AHCI to ATA/Compatible.

I haven`t used kill disk but many other drive wiping programs, it could be that the program has totally wiped the hdd including file system and maybe even sectors etc, try using a boot cd called parted magic and format the hdd back to ntfs file sytem, then try your windows reinstall

Of course it's going to wipe the file system.

As said by Voyagerfan, laptops always run in ahci mode and some don't have the option to change the mode its in. You will have to use the recovery cd that came with it to reinstall windows. If you don't have one, you may be able to order one on their website. What model of laptop is it?

I have now checked the bios and I dont have any sata options. I tried using the recovery cds and still got the same message that windows cant find my hard drive. I need to install the sata drivers but dont have a floppy drive. I've heard that a program called nlite can be used but I dont know how to make a boot disc for it. Any thoughts?
