Help..installing Office Home and Student

I have a four year old HP desktop that came with the limited use version of Office. It was never activated as the unit is not used on the internet and I have lost to original registration code. I now want to use Word, Excel etc on that computer so bought the Office Home and Student 2007 version from Office Depot. I removed the old version and then tried to install the new software but it kept telling me I had the wrong code numbers. I took it back and Office Depot kindly exchanged the opened package. I tried this newer version and get the same results. I contacted Microsoft and they want $60 to look at the problem so I emailed HP and now told tht I have to remove the old code from the computer but they did not tell me how to do this.?? It seems that it is still looking for the original number even though I removed the program.
Can someone help? Thanks....Bill

I uninstalled the Office H&S that came on my HP and it left a bunch of files in the SWSetup directory. I deleted the Office subdirectory with no effects on the computer. I assume you've got XP, so I don't know if there is a similar directory, but look for a directory where setup files are stored. I don't know if this will fix your problem, but it's the first place I'd look.
