My dad's got a sony vaio Pcv - 9913 and the keys P, 9, ?, ; and ] have gone, completely dead so i have to use the on screen keyboard for those and its very slow, not to mention anoying. Has anyone got an idea of anything i could try or is that it, nothing can be done. oh, yeah i'm almost 100% sure nothing has been spilt on them.

Are you sure it's not a software problem?Double check Windows keyboard and input language settings you are using. If warranty is still valid you can return the laptop to Sony for service.

If you had a PS2 connection you could also try an external keyboard to see if this is a problem with the contacts on the main keyboard. If you have the extended service plan bring in for immediate service. looking at the locations of the keys suggests a possible crack running along the contact card under the keys themselves. Did something happen to fall on the keyboard itself?

nothing that i am aware of has fell on his pc keyboard, i will try an external keyboard and see what happens. The warranty ran out about six months ago. his computer has no ps2 slots but if i use an external keyboard in usb could the drivers of both keyboards confilct.

With a laptop there are no drivers for the built in keyboard. Usb keyboards on the other hand are externally connected not directly connected through the usb bus. It sounds like the contact board that the keys sit on or the connections to it are now seeing problems. If it isn't hardware it could be bios or cmos related.

My guess would be there is dirt inside the keyboard.. see if you can open it, and clean it (carefully tough ;) )

Dust and debris are common problems with standard 102 or 104 key models seen with desktops. Laptops are often exposed to less when carried around while traveling. It will take a little longer for that since a carrying case protects them as well as them being folded up when not used. But that's something else to look into there.
