Help Laptop disk space eaten up

I noticed about a week ago that I had low disk space so started deleting progammes to create space, but as soon as I deleted the space then disappeared leaving me with 39mb, having probably deleted well over 1G of stuff, you could almost watch the space disappear.

I have tried scanning for any virus with Norton 360 as well as with AVG and a few online scanners but none of them have come up with any virus, so now I am confused.

I have checked that the system restore isnt eating away at it but it says it has been suspended due to lack of space so am guessing its not the problem either.

I am running xp with a 70G hard drive.

How do you delete all but the last two? when I go into system restore I can only move the % up and down and at the mon is running on 4%
 
Maybe you can't in XP. Lower is to 2% and see what happens.

Also, try going to Applications > System Tools > Disk Cleanup, followed by Application > System Tools > Disk Defragmenter.

Running those two will free up a little space. 70 GB is pretty small, so you might want to consider getting either a second hard drive for all your data, or a larger one to replace the 70 GB one.

Unfortunately no change for the good when I decreased the size, infact lost another 10mb whilst doing it now have 16mb, did defag yesterday and gave me 400mb but that all dissapeared. There isnt really a lot on the computer of any great size either which confuses me as all doc are on either an external hard drive on on my works server.
 
Unforunately, it definitely sounds like you have a worm which is eating away all your space. Your best option may be to format and re-install XP.
Back up your important files on a thumb drive first.
 
Since you seem infected please follow this procedure.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from here, here, here or here and save it to your desktop.
  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • A log will be saved automatically which you can access by clicking on the Logs tab within Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

If you continue to experience problems after doing this, please post a HijackThis log by doing the following:

Download the HijackThis installer from here.
Run the installer and choose Install, indicating that you accept the licence agreement. The installer will place a shortcut on your desktop and launch HijackThis.

Click Do a system scan and save a logfile

Most of what HijackThis lists will be harmless or even essential, don't fix anything yet.

Post the logfile that HijackThis produces along with the Malwarebytes Anti-Malware log
 
Laptop disk space eaten up

My laptop HDD is being eaten up. I've just installed a 200G HDD and transferred 60G from the old HDD. Now my PC is saying 114G has been used. All files including hidden files add to 60G. Where is the rest of the space going? How do I recover it?
