Help me choose my CPU

Im deciding between a Q6600 2.4ghz quad, or a high end (3,0ghz+) duel core. My gut says quad. Im trying to build a computer that i wont need to upgrade for a while. Overclocking is a possibility. Oh, and its for gaming

i'd go Q6600, overclock to 3ghz on air isn't a crazy feat with it.
you also will notice it (quad core) being used alot more in applications down the road.

If you're going to use it mostly for gaming go for a nice Wolfdale dual core. Granted, the quad is easy to get to 3GHz but the Wolfdales are easy to get 3.5GHz+, and for gaming you don't need two cores.

Down the road when more apps need quads, the Q6600 is gonna be old and there'll be a lot more to choose from and cheaper prices.

In other words, I'd get an E8400 for example, overclock it and roll with it. That'd last you until the quads are the "big thing", then you can pick up whatever sweet quad that's popular then.

I would also vote for an E8400 processor. I would not overclock the processor if you want to keep it for say three years. You could burn it out and be forced to buy another. Overclocking shortens the life of components.

well, if you want it to last a real long time i highly suggest spending some money on it.

what's your budget? for gaming you'll want a faster video card, but if you've got the money i highly suggest getting a Q9550.

Go for the quad core, you can overclock it to around 3GHZ.

So you should enjoy it, and a friend of mine loves his quad.

I have a quad and it's great but if you are going to be gaming I recommend the E8400.
The Wolfdale is a 45nm core and will cool easier and overclock better. Overclocking won't shorten the lifespan of your CPU by a whole lot if you keep it cool. My old Athlon XP 2800 has been overclocked since the day I got it and it's still running inside my friend's comp.
