Hi...

I've downloaded RedHat Enterprise Linux 5 form internet....It is splitted into 5 cd images....I made cds from these images and tried to install but i dont understand the boot procedure.....

I'll be grateful for your help.....

Thanks

boot off cd1 and choose install, GRUB or LILO boot loader should come up asking if you want to boot off the hard drive or if you want to start the install. Choose install and follow the onscreen instructions.

Thanks! It worked and i had it installed but now when i start my pc it says that "operating system could not be loaded".

never heard of such error in linux. did you attempt to install on a hard drive that already had an OS like xp for example ?

no. my hdd was completely formatted......

this is my first time with linux.......Are there any formalities of making partitions when installing linux?

no. you don't need to. it partitions your hard drive itself.i don't know about red hat but fedora ,suse, ubuntu etc does that themselves

ok what if i want to install linux on an hd with windows formatted data already on it? can i keep that data from being deleted?

if you have space and another partition you can install linux and then mount the ntfs patition and access your data. providing you know how to do it.

ok. so somehow i have installed it. Its running but now it does not allow me to log in...i used "root" as the username and my password "123456". It doesnot take it.
