I just got a computer from school, although there's so much junk and passwords (I can't even access any website due to this program they have) so I was planning on just reformating the drive C, then I realized I dont have the Windows XP disk.
So I'm thinking of clearing everything and installing Unbuntu. Now, here are my questions.

-There's a drive C and a D, I want to completely remove D, how?
-When I go to install Ubuntu, should I delete XP first?
-HOW do I install Ubuntu?

Yeah I want to basically get rid of everything that the school put on the computer, so reformat pretty much. Do I do that before installing Ubuntu?

YOu can do it from the ubuntu installer cd, just delete the partitions and reformat it. Its very simple to do(simpler than in windows even imo).

Will the Ubuntu installer CD delete both C and D?

Yes, you can totally format the drive and delete both partitions. Speaking of which... usually the D partition is a restore partition, have you tried that? It would be like it came from the factory, usually it will say something like press F11(can be any key though) to restore.

Yeah im at like 80% installed, thanks for the help!
Can I use any antivirus like Windows, or is Unbuntu like Mac and not compatible with anything Windows is

Linux is usually pretty good about staying virus free, i never had one on my machine when i was running linux, but there are companies out there that make antivirus for linux.

Ubuntu is an entirely different world than windows, no .exe, and stuff like that. Its almost virus free, there is not a giant open source community on these forums, but learning the basics of linux(especially ubuntu) isnt all that tough.

Ubuntu 9 has a firewall, I believe. It's hard to imagine how you would need one. All the bad stuff is written for Windows, not Linux. I've never seen nor even heard of a virus on Linux but I'm sure someone, somewhere has encountered one. I wouldn't waste a minute worrying about it.
