Help me please!!! Virus -> Crash -> failed repair of XP

Ok, so I had some virus or more than 1 on my computer. I ran malwarebytes which only picked up 1 infected file. Upon reboot I had the viruses still popping up windows, preventing me from opening files, ect. I tried safe mode and malwarebyte still found the 1 file. I decided to install combofix and hijackthis to make a post here if things were not fixed. I ran combofix on XP in normal mode and closed out bitdefender right after combofix started. Things appeared to work and no viruses showed up on reboot.

I then decided to install the 4 xp updates and 2 hardware updates I had so that bitdefender would stop bugging me as having issues that need fixed. After doing this and rebooting my computer crashes as soon as the xp loading screen comes up. I thought I saw an install wizard when I told xp it could reboot after the upgrade but it closed out after the update window closed and now I can't boot in normal or safe mode. I tried a system restore point to no avail. I ran windows recovery but don't really know what to do there. I couldn't find the files in system recovery to copy and paste to replace the boot files, perhaps because my cd drive is a SATA it didn't show up. I ran the XP disc and repaired the install and it is currently stuck at installing devices 34 minutes remaining. Pretty sure I don't want to turn the power off in the middle of a windows repair install. Can anyone help me?

The only thing I would know to do is to remove the hard drive back it up as a slave on another device and reformat. Please tell me it doesn't have to come to this.

Run a hard drive diagnostic on it. If that doesn't come up with anything, you will have to back up your data and do a fresh install.

I should get to it today or tomorrow, ill let you know how it works. Can I run it without being able to boot windows up?

Well I am not sure why but the repair went through this time. After set up windows did not load; after restarting it loaded. I think once I have time I will reformat just to be safe now that everything is backed up. I have never messed with RAID but maybe I will try since I have 2 hard drives. One is IDE and one is SATA not sure if that makes a difference. Think I will also see about creating a second bootable partition just in case this happens again. Thanks for the help with everything.

Ah, thanks. Good thing it is Christmas time. I may use a backup program or try to come up with a schedule I will follow to do routine back ups in lieu of a new hard drive for Christmas.
