HELP ME PLEASE! What the deal with my CPU?

Hey! I just got a Core 2 Quad Q6600 which is 2.40GHz but CPUZ and Core Temp show it coming up as 1593.66MHz.

I noticed that it says 266MHZ X 6.0.

Shouldnt my Bus Speed be multiplied by 10?

I have a Dell Optiplex 745MT and although it is not my only computer, it is the only one that doesn't allow me to change such settings in the bios.

Sometimes if I sit and watch the frequency the multipler will jump to 7 or sometimes 9 but only for a second.

Why is my Q6600 2.40GHz running at 1.5GHz?

Got Intel SpeedStep enabled? That'll bring down the frequency when it's not under load. If you want your 2.4Ghz all the time, go into the BIOS and disable Intel SpeedStep.

Let us know if you find it in the bios. I think I recall seeing it there, but it's been awhile since I had to go into the bios, and usually it is just to turn on/off sata ports..

I'd sure like to have a pair of 6600's for my twin Dell 745's, but everyone wants too much money for them.
A Q6700 would be great also.

Right now I'm trying to make a deal on a pair of E6600's to tide me over, the Pentium D's suck.

I own a Q8300 in one of my machines and the Core 2 Quads do use SpeedStep which will underclock the CPU when it is at idle. Your Q6600 will only run at 2.4GHz when it is under heavy load. As Voyagerfan said, disable Intel SpeedStep in the BIOS if you want it running at 2.4GHz all the time.

Just review CoreTemp while running Prime95, it should shoot up immediately to 2.4GHz. That CPU can easily run at 3.0GHz btw with a massive improvement in performance. Particularly if you have the SLACR revision.
