Help me please!

I have a 3 year old Compaq with a AMD 3400+ Processor and 512 MB of ram. I just received a RAM upgrade (2GB). I installed the RAM and when I started up the computer, I smelled something burning. I unplugged everything and tried again (how could I break it worse, right?) When I tried again, the computer started, but the light in front of the computer wouldnt turn on. I could hear the hard drive spinning and one of the fans was working. I could open the DVD drive, but not the CD drive. Also, nothing would come on the monitor. I tried putting the 512 RAM back in, but to no avail. Any help would be great. Thanks in advance.

It sounds to me like your fried something. Could be your processor becasue you may have a limit on your board to how much RAM it can handle. I agree just buy a new one. If your not doing anything special with it, then just buy a Dell you can get a basic pc from them for like 499. Or if you have the money build a pc.

Older compaq..I'm betting 1GB was your maximum. Do you have 2 ram slots or 4...? If only 2, I'd bet money that 1GB was your max.

You very well may have toasted your board. Particularly if the original ram now does not work.

Stupid question, but you did make sure to get the right type of ram?

I'm guessing that machine is probably DDR memory and 2100 or 2700.

Can you give us a few more details.? model number?
