Hi all,

I am not sure if I am posting this in the right place... but I have a problem with my new PC and I'm trying to figure out if it is the video card or the monitor or maybe neither that are causing the problem.

I just built a new PC for the first time - AMD X2 4800+, 2GB RAM, 2x 160GB SATA Seagate HDs, X-Fi sound card, liteon optical drive, MSI K8N Diamond Plus motherboard, and evga 7900GTX 512MB RAM video card. I also got a ViewSonic VX2025wm monitor for it.

So I think everything is setup correctly, and I boot the computer for the first time. Everything is great, the lights go on, the fans are spinning (all of them), etc. But the monitor just says "no signal" and then goes black.

I try connecting it with DVI, D-SUB, both, everything. Not working. I call viewsonic support and they tell me that the monitor says no signal because no OS is isntalled and that I need to install the OS before I can use the monitor. So my question is... HOW can I do that? (I am on a laptop right now and don't happen to have an extra monitor laying around - like a CTR - to isntall the OS).

Could this maybe be a problem with my video card not working properly and not sending the signal? Or do you think it is more likely the monitor? And either way... what do you think I should do to try and solve this annoying/nasty problem.

Any help/advice is MUCH appreciated! Thank you. :)

do you know what os is? it is an operating system like windows xp. did you install XP on this computer?

Yeah, I don't know how to install XP without being able to see what I am doing (with the monitor) that apparently wont work unless I install XP first somehow.

That part is completely BS. You don't need XP or any OS for your monitor to show. You monitor should show your computer booting to the BIOS which is booted before the OS.

Call them back and tell them to go screw themselves. :D Total crap. The computer will work fine without an OS.

If it is saying no signal, than that means that the monitor knows that it is connected to the video card, so it is not a problem with the cord, and probably not the monitor. Is the video card correctly connected? double/triple check it and make sure that its power supply is connected, if it has one.

Once you turn the computer on you should see a post screen, as Bobo said, you dont need an OS on the hard drive.

Try the monitor on a different computer and see if it works.

Also, did you hook up the power connector to the video card?

You wouldn't have to. I forgot to plug a power connector into my 7800GTX and it still ran although in Windows, it gave me a warning that performance would be lowered.

As Omega said, try a different monitor as a test. Screw them Viewsonic support fools.

IMO, tech support for anything has no idea what they are saying. its a place in india that reads off a screen. reseat your card and make sure the power is plugged in to the vid card

I thing i had a similiar problem, Cant romember, try clicking the auto button on your monitor or try putting the grafic card into a different slot. By the way we have very similiar comps, Sam grafics :D, Ask Jan he might romember.
