Help Me Set Up a New OS

I want to set up a new operating system, mainly for hosting video game servers. I plan to use a computer that already has windows, so i will partition the HD and install some form of free operating system. What do you guys recommend for ease of use, and minimal size for a server? I'm a n00b, i've only used MS in the past, so help me out! Thanks
 
If you just want to host games you could just use regular windows. What kind of internet conenction do you have? your going to want a T1 line or greater or your upload speeds will be to slow.
 
I'd go with Windows 2000, or Windows server 2003 if that's possible.

Xycron is absolutely correct, you had better be ready for some serious bandwidth dedication.
 
Yeah, i know what you mean. However, the i have hosted servers in the past on my cable connection, and it was OK. Anyways, this is mainly just for friends, it will not be a full time server. Ill look around for an older windows OS, but are there any free os's that would be easy to set up?
 
Your main free OS would be Linux, But most distro's of linix prabally wont even support playing your game. I would just use whatever windows is currently on the PC.
