Help me understand the -p resolutions

I see now on modern LCDs that the resolution is not measured in pixels, but in p (like 720p or 1080p). What does that come from? What does it mean?

720p, 1080i and 1080p, the numbers refer to visible scan lines on a TV monitor and whether it is interlaced or a progressive scan.

Google interlaced and progressive, there's a big debate which is best.

720P/720I = 1280x720
1080P/1080I = 1920x1080

P = Progressive Scan, which to my understanding takes more bandwidth to transmit, but results in higher quality

I = interlaced which takes less bandwidth (It alternates transmitting odd numbered lines in one frame and even numbered lines in another and your mind blurs it together, to my understanding)

720P = the same quality as 1080I if my understanding is correct
