Help me with security

Over the years I have experimented with various security programs. Currentlly I use spybot s&d, adaware, sophos, and whatever the windows one is called. Just wondering if I should switch any of those programs with better ones. Since joing this forum I have been seeing programs names used very commonly such as malwarebytes. Somone give me the rundown on what I need in order to stay safe.

I have sophos but have never really heard anything about it. I know it is an anti-virus program but other than that not much.

Is it worth spending all this money on protection or do some of you just keep restore disks and fresh-install OS whenever something attacks?
 
Spybot and Adaware are old and outdated in todays standards. Malwarebytes and Superantispyware are much better. Most paid versions are not any better than a good free version. I use AVG free edition with windows firewall and on demand scanning using malwarebytes when needed.

Avg has stopped me from visiting bad websites.
