Hi everyone ... I need help. My daughter, a regular on Limewire.com (need I say more?) has soooo many virus in her PC that is basically does not work.

I downloaded a trial copy of Kaspersky AV ... and although that found and fixed a TON of crap ... her PC worked for a day or two, then crapped out again.

My QUESTION is this: All I have is the REINSTALL XP CD that came with her computer.

I want to REFORMAT and RELOAD from scratch the Windows XP.

Is there a link on the net where it showed a guy like me how to go about that? I have some degree of PC literacy ... but mostly as a user, not a fixer.

HELP !! My duaghter is 14 ... and shes getting PISSED !!!

Seriously ... and help you folks can give this newbie, would be MUCH appreciated.

Thanks!

Just put in the CD during the startup. ( maybe you have to push a button to boot the cd, but it will indicate that, worst case, you'll have to set the cd drive as first boot device in the bios )

But once the setup is running, its basicly following instructions, and its installed :)

just one thing,.. pop out the network cable during the installation, and maybe put a copy of avast! antivirus or so on a usb stick or so, so you can install an antivirus before you go online with the pc.

edit: ( you could just try to run it already, and if you run into a problem, just post it here.. Im pretty sure it would be answered pretty fast :o )

Thanks Archangel ... it is formatting now. I'll let you know what happens.

Great forum!!

Hey ... is that a picture of you? :)

Oh nooooooooo

Now I am really hosed.

The Reinstall CD that came with the PS was for the Operating System only. My daughter cannot find any other CD with all the drivers.

The speakers are dead. No internet. Cant adjust Screen settings (stuck at 8 bit color)

This is nooooooooo fun

Any thoughts?

Get the drivers for the NIC card and get the internet to work. THen download all the drivers again. Do you know what the hardware installed is?

Ugh ... ok. I have to get back to work, but will try these things later. There goes a whole morning down the damn tubes.

And now I am totally frazzled. Gotta leave it alone for a few hours and come back to it later.

Thanks guys :(

Dont worry its just drivers, you will need to install the motherboard chipset, sound and video drivers, you will need to update windows too!

My apologies for never folowing up with you guys ...

But your advise did the trick. I just went on Dell's website and uploaded all the drivers for the PC's male/model ...

Was actually easy.

Thanks to all who offered advise ... great forum you have here.

Happy Holidays To All !!

Now tell her to stop useing Limewire. Its just bad news. Im sure she can live without illegally downloading music. And she shouldnt be the one getting pissed. You should be. She screwed up the computer and leaves you to deal with it. Just my opinion.

Well you do have to pay for it I think, cuz I used to know someone who bought PRO and from what I hear if you pay for your music in any way then its not illegal. And also should have had AV anyway....

If she is paying for it, then its not illegal. However, how many 14 year olds will pay, when they can just get the music for free?

using limes doesnt do anything to your comp if you know what the heck you are doing...

Spyware is secretly bundled in the download, so yes it does do something. Also, it doesn't matter if you download files or not, viruses can still be planted.
