Howdy!

My mum wants a laptop before Christmas and is looking at a price range of around £250-300. She'll only be using it for web surfing, online poker (William Hill) and Facebook games (e.g. Bejeweled Blitz).

We're currently looking at the Dell Inspiron 15 (£329) but am sure there are better specs out there for £300.

Thanks in advance!

P.S. Please check out my thread here about a desktop for myself.

Conzy, is it possible for you to link us to 3 reliable online sites so we can help you? I am not talking anything like Dell or HP sites but online retailers.

And if could help us Yanks what is 300 in U.S. currency?

By the way, I looked at those specs for the Dell and I would agree, there has to be better specs for what they are charging.

That is 473.47 USD.
Try for Toshiba. They have a good lowend laptop that runs the AMD V series for 399 USD, ~252.84 GBP.

Sure, but I only really know of http://www.dell.co.uk/ and http://www.toshiba.co.uk/. http://www.pcworld.co.uk/gbuk/index.html, http://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/index.html and http://www.tesco.com/ are some retailers but I have no idea if they're overpriced or not.

Oh, and £300 is $474.

Write down the name of this laptop, then look for it on Amazon UK. Not the best, but it has good battery life and it has the Nvidia ION graphics processor.

I recommend the Compaq Presario CQ62-220SA Notebook (Intel Celeron 900 2.2GHz, 2 GB RAM, 250 GB HDD, 15.6-inch LED display, Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit).

Thanks very much everybody! That one looks quite good, what about this one though? Also, are they both better than the new Dell Inspiron 15?

Also, I've heard a lot of good things about Asus laptops; which one would I be looking at in the £300-350 range?

I have a laptop almost exactly like it. It is very sturdry and powerful, and the battery lasts well over 6 hours. my c650 cartwheeled down a fligt of stairs and all it got was a barely noticible scratch on the lid. Its pretty powerful too.
