I have a old HP laptop (nx7400) Yesterday it wouldn't boot up and came up with the "no system disk..." after rebooting a few times it worked but then randomly Ubuntu crashed so i rebooted a few times same error no system disk or sometimes it would half boot Ubuntu but say I was missing files etc and sometimes it would boot just fine and work for a while...

I assumed it was simply my hard drive dieing no problem went and got a new one installed Ubuntu again worked great turned off the laptop and went out, when I returned "no system disk" again some times it will boot fine seems to be random though. Clearly it isn't a faulty hard drive but I cant see what has happened??:confused::confused:

Thanks for reading :)

New hard drives have a fairly high failure rate, so I wouldn't rule that out just yet... No harm in running some tests on it. Seatools works well, even with non-seagate drives. A RAM test is probably in order as well. Memtest86 it overnight and see if there are any errors. If it still fails, I'd lean towards a failing motherboard.
