$50 is pretty cheap if you're actually looking for something with features such as automatic shutdown. You might check eBay for a used model for that price, but for new you probably won't find one for less than $100.

There are several options that are almost in that price range but it all depends on your load. What kind of load do you need backed up for 30 minutes? If you're backing up a lamp you could do it with a smaller UPS, but if you have a PC that has 250-500W 30 minutes is a long time and will be much more expensive. For entry level system, I would recommend you go with a small UPS such as the APC Smart UPS 700. It's an industrial UPS that can provide you 18 minutes of runtime at 225W. If you have a small system, you could get close to the 30 minutes you're looking for. Also, don't forget that the 700 has AVR boost/drop and power filtering.


Part of the problem with the 50$ budget is that even if you get lucky and you get a good UPS at a great price, most likely it won't have good batteries so you'll need those buy those anyway. You might as well spend $100, get yourself a good UPS, new batteries, warranty and your thirty minutes of runtime.
