I have recently decided to build a new machine and I am regreting it.

Currently I have:

MSI NF750-G55 AM3 NVIDIA nForce 750a SLI HDMI ATX AMD Motherboard
AMD Phenom II X3 720 2.8GHz 3CPU
OCZ Platinum 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Dual Channel
OCZ StealthXStream OCZ700SXS 700W ATX12V / EPS12V SLI Ready PSU
Dual NVIDIA GeForce 8600GT 512MB DDR2 128Bit
Vista 32Bit

I have tried a few different HD's all SATA. I don't have the video cards in (using the onboard) because I though they might be causing the issues. WRONG.
Everything is less than a month old.

Sometimes it boots fine then freezes (usually causing the display to go screwy) shortly after everything loads. Other times it freezes during boot up. It does seem to freeze less in safe mode, but it still freezes.
I have all drivers that came with mobo installed, but I don't think its the drivers because it froze while trying to install fresh Vista on formatted drive (no other drive attached)
I am going crazy with this and would hate to through $300+ new hardware out the window.

Go into your BIOS, and set SATA/RAID mode to IDE Emulation, if it is AHCI it does weird things. if it's on "Auto" se if you can set it to IDE Emulation.

Perhaps you should also do a memtest

Thanks for the advice guys, unfortunately it was already set to IDE and Memtest found 0 errors.
It froze while trying to install a new windows on a brand new formatted hard drive so I don't think that's the problem either.

Could a bad CPU cause my problems? I think it has to be either that or the mother board, and this is already the second mobo I've tried.

Did you have the same problem with the first mobo then.

yes, it was an open box so I figured it was bad and I returned it and bought a new one. Then that had the same problem so I thought it might be power since I only had a 400 watt PSU, so I just put in a 700 watt and still the same. I ran memtest and tried each stick by itself and had the same problem so I don't think the RAM is bad. The only thing left that I can think of is the CPU. I just want to try anything I can before I go through the trouble of returning the CPU since I bought it from Newegg and it takes a while to get a new one.

well, I sent the CPU back today for a new one (can't get a refund, just replacement). It will take like 10-14 days probably before I have the new one. I'll keep you posted.
