I have fallen behind in the technology advances of computers and would appreciate some help. What pieces do you reccomend for a computer to do the following for less than $1000.

- Store music and photos
- Everquest 2
- Age of Empires type of games
- internet browsing
- DVD/Cd burner

I have a monitor, keyboard, mouse, cheap speakers (good enough for now)

I know there are a few posts about this already but their budgets seem to be alot higher than mine.

Thanks

PS - Windows Xp and office would be nice

Thanks for the help guys. To throw a wrench in the listing though, I checked out newegg and it doesnt ship to Canada. The 2 sites that I know of for computer stuff in Canada are http://www.ncix.com/ and http://www.tigerdirect.ca/indexca.asp?SRCCODE=CANWGOOCABRA&CMP=KNC-CANGOO

I checked out the items u listed and neither site carries the Samsung Spinpoint or the PNY brand 8800GTS.

I am pretty sure we Canadians get hosed on prices here even though the dollar is pretty much even. I priced it all at NCIX and total w/o the 2 items listed above comes to $810.

Another question I have is: Is XP a single license software? Can I use the one from my old computer while keeping old computer running for my wife???

PS - I do tend to burn alot of DVDs

the hard drive above(samsung) has 320GB and the other one has only 250GB

i recogmend that you only buy the 8800GT instead of the GTS. that will save you some money, or you can use the extra money to get a quad core or something. you can play any game out with the 8800GT at good resolutions and high settings. also for music and photos you should definetly get a bigger hard drive...

Ok I guess I should of rephrased that question above. Besides the HDD capacity is there any real differance between them? Which one of the 2 HDDs would you reccomend? They are the 2 cheapest ones of similar make I could find on the Canadian stores.

Also still wondering if it is possible to load windows xp on both my computers instead of buying another copy?

I just looked for the XP disk and found only one, does that sound right only 1 disk for xp home? Says on it for sale with new puters only.

Q6600 is the Quad in the price range. The GTS G92 is fine. And since the Q6600 is all you can get... Well it just stinks compared to a Dual. It's made for multitasking, not gaming. Lower FSB speeds, and older architecture.

Get just one DVD Burner. And I don't see the uses of LightScribe at all. Just another way for them to make money offa you.

The 8600GT just plain stinks, BAD.

Well I convinced my wife into a couple hundred more so I ordered pretty much the parts from the first reply I got, with the exception of the dvd burner and windows(gonna see if disk from old puter works).

I have never built a computer b4 but from what I have read the parts can only fit in 1 spot right??

Once all together how do I get it running??
Is there astep by step guide I can follow?? As I am a little nervous on this but am hoping it will go well.

PS - Thanks for all the replies so far

Yes one spot.

Do not forget the STANDOFFS! The little brown screw things that you screw into your case then screw your motherboard on top.

You just pop the Windows disk in and boot from it.

You might need to configure in CMOS to make the OD the first bootable drive.

The O/S is basically self explanatory when you get into the setup part. Just create a new partition with maximum space available, and do a quick format...

What is CMOS??
What is OD??

So I basically put it all together turn on put in windows disk and follow instructions?

CMOS is Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor... Not that you need to know.

OD is Optical Drive, more known as the DVD or CD Drive.
