HELP on Puting computer together

I have never done this before, but upon reading these forums I figured I would give it a shot. These are the parts i bought:

I have installed the Motherboard, RAM, HDD, CPU and Video Card. The DVD drive is being picked up tomorrow. My problem is:

- The case has extra wires I don't know where to connect to
- 1 green wire +
- 1 white wire -
- 1394 (says do not put into USB slot)
- HD Audio -> AC'97 -> 11misc wires (all on 1 stringer)

- The HDD did not come with any wires, however my motherboard did (1 IDE, 1 Floppy Disk, 2 SATA 3 GBs) It looks like on the HDD there is space for 2 wires to connect. What would those be (I am pretty sure 1 is a SATA)

Thats as far as I have gotten. Any helpful hints on the DVD drive when I get it tomorrow?? Is the power supply easy to hook up? What all should get a wire from the PSU??

the motherboard needs a 24 pin connector, the hard drive will need a SATA connector(power supply should have some. they are black, where as the others are 4 pin white.) the CD/DVD burner will need one, Fans may need one.

make sure you put the heatsink and fan for the CPU on correctly.... its critical. make sure you put on thermal paste too. just a drop.

the SATA cables plug into the hard drives and the CD/DVD burners.(unless you got IDE. which you didnt. so take the SATA cable and put it into the back of the CD/DVD burner and the other end into the motherboard. Same with the hard drives.

video card is just plugged into the motherboard.

refer to the motherboard manual to figure out where the cables that came with the case go. they are used for the front USB ports and audio ports. you cant use them if you dont plug those cables in.

Also make sure the motherboard doesnt have any screws or anything under it so it doesnt create a short.

First the small wires for power, reset button, power and/or hard drive activity leds, 1394 firewire go to a small block of pins on the board itself usually near one edge. For that you have to look closely at the board diagram seen in the manual that comes along with the board.

Since those will most likely be abbreviated, power = pwr, power led = pled, hard drive activity = hdled, and so forth. The main power connectors are the single 20+4pin pull off plug for use on old boards seeing 20pin sockets and the 4wire 12v cpu feed mandatory on all boards.

The audio jacks and firewire ports are optional there if you plan to plug in a head phone, mic or firewire cable. The sata hard drives are powered by a wide shaped plug coming out from the supply while the data cable goes from the drive itself to one of the sata ports on the board. The manual will also show a guide if you get lost trying to find the primary master and slave ports as well as the secondary master and slave ports.

The case I bought has H.D.D. LED (Orange/White), Power SW(Blue/white), Reset SW (both wires are gray), SPEAKER (Yellow and Black) and two wires that are marked positive(Green) and negative(White). I connected all but the last two (green, white), any idea what these are for?

Also my case has a Firewire which looks like my front USB connection but my motherboard manual says "Do not plug the IEEE 1394 bracket (2x5-pin) cable into the USB header." Is it possible that my motherboard doesnt support the plug??

Thanks for the info on the paste, the CPU did not mention putting any on but the motherboard instructions did, so wasn't going to as I assumed the CPU book to be a better source of info.

There is a fan built into the vid card, does this need power or does it get power through the motherboard from the pci connection?

The HDD did not come with a manual, what do you mean master and slave?

Thanks for the info on my board not having that 1394 thing. Do I just leave it hanging inside?

Anyone have any idea on those other 2 wires???

Small connector is the SATA. The bigger one is the power.

Those other case connectors are for case USB, FireWire, and Sound.
 
Any wires like those for firewire where there's no place on the board to plug them in can simply be tucked aside out of the way. Some cases even include plastic ties for securing the top or front wiring harness for power, reset, leds, along other things like usb, fireware, eSATA, audio jacks, etc. there.

For the power and leds the white wire since that is common with more then one would be the ground wire. Close examnination of the board's diagram and if there's a color coding for the block of pins to signfy which pins are for what have to looked over closely so you don't reverse wiree things.

For the green and white wire left over does the case have any audio jack on the front or top like for headphones or mic? A small booklet that comes with a case or a look at the product information shows that to be for using a microphone there. Front Ports: USB, Audio(mic input), IEEE 1394 are what are seen when taking a look just at the photos shown as well as product information on the page at newegg there.
 
I think I have all the wires conected now.

The only thing I am wondering is someone mentioned master/slave
- Does this need to be taken into consideration with only 1 DVD drive?? Does master slave thingy cross between HDD and DVD??


- PS - No manual for HDD or DVD drive
 
Please ignore previous post, I fired it up without trying slave/master and everything seems to work.

However when I started the install process I created a partition and it formated and installed windows on one of the partitions.

How do I get the other partition formated and to show up as a drive letter?

In both XP and Vista the Disk Management tool found in "Control Panel>Administrative Tools>Computer Management>Storage" will list both hard drives, the partitions on them, and the optical drives even any floppy drives installed. If you did create a second partition you can right click on it there and choose the format option.

Later being a secondary not Windows partition you can also choose a different drive letter except those already in use by another drive or partition. C will always be the Windows default.

The C designation is reserved for Windows regardless of What drive you are booting from at the time. If D is used by an optical drive you first change that to E, F, G, or any other free letter and then set the second drive to that or change the second partition's letter from D since that will bump the first optical drive to E and then F for a second one.
