Hello im going to upgrade my dads computer. Im going to put an 60mb hdd and 30mb hdd. Well he is running windows 98 se. I want to upgrade it to windows xp SP2 . He has a Partition for a back up for the 98 so when the computer crashes he can put in 2 cds and it will reformat and install windows. Well he wants it so if XP ( NEVER ) Craps the bed he can put the cds in and put 98 back in if xp crashes. So if i keep the restore ( back up 98 ) Partition and have windows XP on a different Partition can i still reformat it back to windows 98 SE with the disks he has just in case something happens ( knock on wood ) . But So would it work like that or not ?

I think you want a bigger HDD than 90 MB, because XP needs at least 3GB.

I recommend you just get one large 100GB HDD.

I wouldn't put 98 on another partition. If XP fails, then just wipe the HDD and reinstall 98.

The prebuilt there came with which size drive the 30gb or the 60gb model? If 98 is alreafy on the 30gb drive simply install XP on the larger 60gb model to see a dual boot of both versions. If XP "kicks the bucket"?(not as likely as 98 will) simply unplug the XP drive and use the recovery disks to see 98 restored to the original defaults.

That will save the original recovery partition as well as Fat32 primary needed to 98 on the first drive. Plus the option for running a newer version as the second or default OS while still being able to restore to factory condition remains.

When installing XP on the second drive it will become the default until changing the setting in the boot.ini tab found in the msconfig utility of XP where 98 can still be set as default with XP as the option on the XP boot option screen.
