Well my friend is having a problem with his pc, he recently took his hd from another computer (a different brand name), and inserted it into his other, when he screws everything in, and plugs everything in, then plugs in the VGA, turns it on their is a beeping sound without any display except for plz check your monitor settings or osmething of the sort.

How can he fix this ?

he fixed the error now, now he has cannot boot or something, he tried messing with the jumpers but no go, what do you guys suggest now>

Well, if you ask me, I don't think you can just insert a different HDD, with a seperate install of Windows, *which has been configured for different hardware* and expect it to boot up without a hitch. I'm not sure whether what I'm saying right now is absolutely correct but that's what I think... :)

i have not heard a problem like this in a long time, especially since we past the 2k era. in anycase, sometimes what used to happen is that with a different bios it would interpret the drive geometry differently and cause the boot sector, or even the entire FS to not be visable to the new computer.

i would recommend that he backup the drive on his old computer, put the now cleaned hdd on the new computer, format and reinstall win on it, and then restore his backups. especially since it would probably be completly different hardware. you dont need remenants of older hardware lurking in ure windows install

would this pose a problem? his boot disk are emachines and his pc is northgate. the northgate pc doesnt have a recovery disk can he used the emachines disk?
