HELP PLEASE!! asap! person loacating via IP???

There is someone on my web site that is posting harassing messages. I have banned his account and IP address. But he has a dynamic IP. So I am wondering how I can find out where he lives, or some type of information useful to me. His IP address is:

adsl-69-111-56-55.dsl.pltn13.pacbell.net

So what can I do with the IP to help me find him?

If you banned his account that should do it, unless he is creating new accounts. Anyway that is not his IP address. It is the network he is on. After tracing the info in your post it would seem that the user you wish to block uses SBC. So you may be able to block IP: 69.111.56.55, which should block the user no matter what IP he has, because he obtains the IP from the ISP at the above mentioned IP. Of course this would also block anyone else that was recieving an IP from this ISP at the above mentioned IP as well.

For more info try using NeoTrace http://downloads-zdnet.com.com/NeoTrace-Pro/3000-2648-7139158.html

Hope this helps.

I entered his network's IP address in the target box on the program you recommended to me. I got the map above. So does that mean his ISP is in the San Farnscisco area? That is what it looks like on the map.

Also, is there a specific way I can trace/find his IP address, and run it through the program you recommended?

It goes to a "general area" as I get my ip from Santa rosa sometimes (3hr drive).. And im in San Jose.

Just block his ip.

Not that I am aware of. You should be able to find his actual IP in your servers logs. What OS does your Web server use? What type of discussion forum is it? PHPBB2? If you are using a Linux box you should be able to look in roots mail to find what IP's accessed your server and when.

Well the thing is the forum is one of those "pay $10 a month for someone else to host it for you" forums. I do not know what the OS is on the server the forum is on, but my OS is XP Home SP-2.

Here is a link to the site.

Also, the map has a yellow dot in CA. But it says this:

Registrant:
SBC Internet Services, Inc
1701 Alma dr
Plano, TX 75075
US

So, is his ISP in CA or TX then? Why does the map show something different from the text?

Trizoy is right, the info is general. In Neotrace if you switch your view to node view the info is a little easier to understand. Since your site is hosted you might want to give them a call, explain the problem, and nicely ask them to check the logs for the offending users IP, but like you said his IP is dynamic so it will change. If you block the IP that I suggested earlier it will effectivly block him from accessing your site, but it will also block everyone else coming from that network.

The best thing to do though would be to ask the admin that hosts your site if they can retrieve his IP.

Good luck.

PS

The guy is getting his internet service from CA not Texas. That info is just what was provided by SBC when they registered, I would imagine one of their larger centers is in Texas.

Well it dident work because he is on a dynamic IP. I think the forum gives me his IP and not the ISP's IP. This is what I posted on another site. CHeck it out:

I am currently the administrator on the following site:

I am having problems with a user. He is constantly violating the user policy. I have banned his accounts and his e-mail address, but he keeps making new e-mail accounts and user names. I cannot ban his IP address because it appears he is on a dynamic IP. Is there a way I can find his ISP’s IP address and just ban all users under the ISP? Is there a way that I can view the server logs for my site so I can find out his ISP’s IP? Also is there a way I can find out where he lives via his IP?
Not only is he posting messages that violate the forum’s rules, but they are illegal too.

I have downloaded NeoTracePro. I was trying to use it to trace the various IP addresses I got from him. I am having trouble using it though. Does anyone know how to use it?

Below is a print screen of the IP addresses the forum gives me that he is posting under.

Given the variety of IP addresses he's posting from, i'd guess he's using an anonymizing proxy server, which makes it impossible to simply ban accounts from his ISP.
