I play a lengthy programme that takes up alot of cpu usage like encoding a film to write to cd,
Enter bios sometimes it will shutdown,
If i run memtest86,
If i run prime95,
If i play a small game like quick snooker for about half an hour continously,
If i play call of duty 2,

Sometimes it will shutdown through rebooting it asweel for a few goes, if i leave it then turn it on it normally will first time.

Things it will do happily and not shut down, going online on this forum to work out what is wrong,
Sitting there not doing anything,
downloding music or films,
Burning to discs

It managed to stay on long enough for me to reformat it the other day but it still shuts down as normal after it.

anyone got any ideas i will be willing to try anything,

Also i have swapped RAM with my brothers and it still did it, he tried mine and his ran fine???

It shuts down whether it on battery or power and i have nothing running off the usb ports or any of the other ports, the fan seems to be working fine!

my specs are...... AMD 64 mobile athlon, 1gig Ram (2x512mb) ati 128mb 9700 mobility radeon graphics card, 80 gig hard drive the make of it is Tiny!

many thanks!

how often have you proven those?

it seems like you tried almost everything, my guess is your psu.

EDIT: does it restarts? or completely shuts down?

If it's totally shutsdown, it could be the PSU and it could be from overheating. Heat can trigger the system to cut all power to components and just turn off to save the components. It can be either one, I just hope it's not due to already damaged components.

Heat's usally a laptops worst enemy. Get something like speedfan and try to keep an eye on the temps. Perhaps even something that could control the fans manually.

what can i try if its the psu? how can i know if it is? the computer some times cuts off if i try to start it up straight away would this suggest anything? cheers for the help!

i downloaded a programme called fanspeed its telling me the temps of the 2 sensors and one is 45oc with a green tick next to it, the hard drive, the other is saying 75oc the cpu i guess, and that has got a picture of a small flame next to it, does that mean anything, also i have got my laptop sitting out side where its cold the hard drive temp has dropped but not the cpu?

Whoa, so the HD is idling at 75c? That's pretty high if it's only idling. But dont know why that would cause a crash, unless it's heating up the interior of the casing and triggering something else to shutdown. Is there a HD compartment that you can open and still run the computer? If so, I'd leave it open, turn on the computer, and do some heavy tasks with a fan blowing on it. See if it turns off or not.

no the hard drive went doen in temp when i took it out side, the cpu temp stayed at 75 didnt even move that was half an hour outside and was pretty cold out there! i ran prime 95 and it lasred right through to test 5 then the battery stated to go so i bought it in leaving it running plugged it in and 2-3 mins later it shut down so im gonna take it outside again but also take the power cable out with it plugged in and see if it lasts!
