Help please

My computer (Windows XP pro) won't load. After I logon the screen goes white and nothing loads, I can get task manager though.
The same thing happens in safe mode, except the screen is black.

Anyone got any suggestions?

Also my hardrive is partioned with OS / programs on one partition, files on another.
Can I reinstall windows on the one partition without loosing my files on the other?

Sorry if this is in the wrong forum, am still finding my way around.

I think its probably solveable without the need to reinstall. First i'd use system restore, %SystemRoot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe try rollback a couple of weeks before the problem. also do a chkdks c: /F /R to check for hard drive errors, yes you'll need to set it to run on reboot.

Do you have multiple accounts is the problem the same for all users. You can also you compmgmt.msc, goto system view, see each of the logs does anything stand out.

Yep, Its time to reinstall windows. I have seen that happen on many pcs in the past. A virus can sometimes cause it. I would try to boot up in safe mode and try running anti virus scans. Also, run a msconfig, Start, Run, Type in msconfig. Disable any programs in there that might be causing it. Some times spy ware can start up apon boot and cause the computer to mess up. But be careful of what you disable so you dont disable any important driver. You can post a list of programs in msconfig and we can tell you whats needed to boot and whats not. But first try to boot in to safe mode and report back.
