My dad recently had a friend put together a build from a barebones kit. The specs are

AMD phenom X6 1055T processor
8GB generic ram
GB ga-m68mt-s2p micro atx motherboard
sparkle geforce 8400gs graphics card
generic 450watt power supply
1TB hard drive
128GB SSD
Windows 7 Premium

We have had several problems with this computer. First, we could not get anything to download: WOW, iTunes, SWTOR, even the Sims. Every file we downloaded was corrupted. We originally had the OS on the SSD and we tried downloading all games and files to the HDD. We ended up wiping the operating system from the SSD and put it on the HDD. Now, files can be downloaded successfully, however more problems have developed. My browser (firefox) crashes often, WOW also crashes within 10 minutes of playing, or crashes as soon as I try to log on, and Windows updates will not install successfully either. Diablo III will not run (but I realize this may be because of the graphics card), and Mists of Panderia will not download either. My question here is what should we do? If anyone knows what the problem may be, that would be a huge help. Also, do you think we should spend the money on fixing and upgrading this build? Or should we just start to go for a whole different computer?

Was the win 7 included in the kit? When you say crashing, do you mean just the program crashes, or windows crashes and blue screens/you have to restart?

That download problem is weird. Are you using wireless or wired? What kind of SSD? Sounds like your SSD is defective.

No, the windows 7 wasn't included. Its a retail copy. And I've experienced both crashes. Twice I've had windows crash completely and go to the blue screen. Mostly just the programs crash though. With WOW I get a "fatal error" message along with the crash.

I'm using a wired connection and my SSD is a Crucial M4 CT128M4SSD2 128GB

Try updating the SSD firmware. Just download it from Crucial, burn the IOS to a disc and then boot off the disc, type 'yes' at the prompt and you're done. You can flash/update the M4's firmware without having to reformat the drive which is nice.

May also be worth updating your BIOS. Download the latest BIOS from Gigabyte's website and then look in your manual for instructions on how to flash it.

What are the temperatures of the CPU?

im bettin you got a bad ram stick, run memtest for at least 12+ hours, sometimes ram can be tricky that way, 1 or 2 passes is NOT enough to verify ram is not faulty.

Where to start..

No name power supply, bad idea.
Slow graphics card, does not support dx11 features if you're attempting to use them(it's a dx10 card).
Ram needs to be tested in each slot with each stick to determine if any are bad.
Make sure you're using the most up-to-date drivers for WoW, older ones have reported crashes and things like walls sticking out:
