ok, i think i got a pretty good idea of what's going on. but i was wanting to get some other opinions on this
ok, first problem, it started out only once in awhile, but has been getting more frequent. when booting up, my system would get to the windows xp pro splash screen, then reboot. and it would do it about 3 times and then finally get to the logon screen.
second, the other day, tried starting the system, and the monitor would start to come on, then get an amber power led. i didn't have another monitor, but i had another system. only thing with the other system is it has no memory. so i swapped memory, hooked it up to make sure monitor wasn't going out. worked fine. put memory back in my system, unhooked cd and dvd player(just got dvd player from someone, not sure if it even works yet, i was about to test it.) then it posted fine. shut back down, hooked cd burner and dvd drive back up, posted fine.
tried to turn system on again later, and it worked, but it took almost 10 minutes to boot to windows. had to go to work so i left it alone and told everyone not to use it. noone listened of course. wife had same problems i had. dad and step-mom, however, said they had no problems with it(not like they would know something was wrong anyways, but that's beside the point) also, my wife noticed it was not detecting our extra hdd or floppy. i think hdd was due to a disconnected power cable though.
after work, i had time to work on it. thought i'd test memory. i only have 2 slots on my board, and i have 2 sticks of 128 ram. tried stick 1 in slot 1, no video. tried it in slot 2, posted fine. so i'm thinking memory slot. tried stick 2 slot 2, posted fine. stick 2 slot 1, posted fine. tried stick 1 back in slot 1, posted fine again. put both sticks in, works fine. and when i first started having problems, i reseated memory and it did not solve the issue.
i was thinking probably mbd issue. but also maybe windows due to the restarting thing when it tried to release control to windows.
any opinions?
any input is greatly appreciated
