dell xps9000 i got 2 new 4g ram sticks. stock is 6x1g. which do i replace? colors alternate red & blue, channels i assume?

do i need another 4g stick?

could it be 3 channels? do i need a 3rd stick to balance it out or can i just use the 2 i have?

If there are 6 slots then you need to get triple channel memory kit. You should use 3 sticks the same.

You can use any variety of sticks with your triple channel setup (or even single sticks for single channel or 2 for dual, etc), but you'll have a better time with balanced capacities between channels.

I'd probably ditch the 1 G sticks and get another 4G. Then you'll have another 3 slots to even upgrade to something like +24 GB in the future which could add to your existing 8.

my plan is ultimately to end up 6x4G, as i can afford more RAM. i just upgraded my GC to gtx750ti, & i bought the 2x4G sticks to help keep up. but i have heard conflicting reports about only swapping out 2. i've been told that it's a 2 channel system, color coordinated slots; and i've been told it's 3 channels (a1,a2,b1,b2,c1,c2). dell sucks, & i'm not paying another $100 just to have access to their crappy support. i really want to put these in, it's like staring at cookies i can't eat, but i'm not trying to brick just cuz i don't really know what i'm talking about.

Socket 1366 contains a triple channel system, but you can use just the two sticks of RAM if you want (which would give you a dual channel setup). There's really no tangible benefit of a triple channel setup in of itself over dual channel for most workloads.

Most pairs of slots as you had indicated (A1,A2,B1,B2,C1,C2) are common configurations, so A1+B1 should suit fine.

You can even mix capacities of channels and the controller will interleave between them, so you could even leave in your 1 G sticks, although performance may not be entirely consistent with unbalanced capacities.

would i be better off putting the 4's in a1 & b1, leaving 1's in c1 & c2, & having a2 & b2 empty? is 4-4-2 better than 4-4-0, or does imbalance of any kind throw it off? i'm not a huge gamer, mostly i play war thunder, & the graphics card upgrade was awesome for it. i'd hate to see performance get sketchy when i'm trying to make it better.

Sure, why not. You could always benchmark both and verify :)

There shouldn't be a real noticeable difference in performance but if you need the capacity then that extra 2 GB can come in handy.

Usually it will run the lowest amount in tri-channel (ie. 2GB) and the remainder in dual channel.
