Help! Random shut offs (asus a7n8x-e)

i built this computer years back and now recently, i cant be sure when this started, about a year ago, it just shuts off randomly, no warnings, no errors of any kind even after reboot. i have an asus a7n8x-e motherboard with athlon xp 2500+ with 1.5 gb of ram. i believe the power supply is either a 350 or 400 watt, i cant remember what i bought.
so the computer shuts off randomly, its as if someone has just pulled the plug on it. however, the power light remains glowing, not fully on though. the power button doesnt do anything until i unplug the AC power, and wait for the power light to fade out. then i plug back in and boot up as if nothing happened.
at a point it had seemed to be after certain amount of time, but it doesnt seem to matter. not it seems to happen more when the computer is requiring more power. i have disconnected all the drives to check if i was using too much power, all i have connected is a 40gb hd (through a PCI controller since the motherboards IDE1 slot doesnt work properly, cant remember why though) and a cd drive in IDE2. OS doesnt seem to make a difference either. i have i reinstalled XP twice and now im running 7 RC1 and it still does the same thing.
any suggestions on how i could figure this problem out. its getting annoying now.

generally i keep the case and fans dust free, but i never really checked the heat sinks, could it be a heat issue on the processor? i never got any indication that anything was over heating

Open speedfan and check temps. Its not like a message is gonna pop up and say your cpu is hot.
 
Your PSU may be bad. consider a $40-$50 500watt psu for a quick fix. Check temps, clean heatsinks, update drivers.
 
so i ran speedfan and i got a lot of high temperatures, but how i can i find what these temps are of. it does look like the 2nd of 3 fans doesnt work since its giving a reading of 0rpm
