Hi guys,

Im hoping someone could give me some advice please.

Ive been given and old Packard bell PC which I am currently doing a little project with. Basically its running a Pentium 4 2400mhz on a Gigabyte GA-8SIML motherboard.

I have a Dell inspiron 1720 laptop which is no longer in working order and I have managed to salvage the CPU which is a Pentium T2390 (1.86MHz) 533MHz dual core.

I know the motherboard is slightly on the old side! But I was wondering if this processor would work or if it would fry my piece of fine antique? Would it even be worth changing the old CPU for the one taken from my laptop?

If anyone could give me some advice or any help at all I would really appreciate it.

Thank you.

Matt.

^^ Exactly

To my knowledge older laptops have the cpu's soldered directly onto the mobo. I believe this is to protect the companies a$$. So people cant upgrade, then have problems and go to the manufacture. It also saves the companies money so you cant go out and upgrade instead of buying a higher-end laptop.

I could be wrong but, this is my theory

Actually in the case the OP is describing he is dealing with the possibility of using a a socket p or socket m CPU (which BTW is on a pga478 package) on a MB that uses pga478. While the CPU will fit the socket, the pinouts are different and the CPU would not work.

The MB he has will not support the CPU he wishes to put in it.

Thanks for your input guys. Id rather have a slow computer than none at all, so ill put the cpu from the laptop on ebay.

Once again, cheers.
