Help - Spysheriiff may have damaged my computer

Hi, I'm new to this forum and I'm a relative Computer newbie in general, having only owned a computer ( Samsung V20 lap-top ) for around 2 1/2 years. So I'm sorry if my specific terminology and general lack of know-how may be a bit trying for some of you, but please be patient :)

Anyway this is the problem. Recently when surfing the net my computer managed to contract what believe to be a spyware / malware virus - SPYSHERIFF. I started to receive various pop up windows inviting me to purchase software products to remove it ( adawarepuisher, adawarebazooka, spyfighter, ad-project, win fixer, win antivirus pro ) as well as well as pop-ups linking to variuos Pornographic sites.

All of this leading me to believe that my computer had been hijacked. I ran Ad-Aware SE, AVG & Spybot all of which did not remove Spysheriiff. After doing a search, I decided to purchase Spyware Doctor. I ran this program and the Shysheriiff appears to have been removed, I have seen no more of the troublesome pop-up windows.

The problem that I now have is that I am no longer able to download updates from the MS site. The system checks my computer, offers me the updates that I require, I select then and then click on install, at this point the Install progress window appears and then crashes, every time - AGGRR !! :mad:

At the moment there are about ten critical updates that I cannot successfully download and I am also very concerned about what damage may have been done.

I would really appreciate any help here. Thanks.

PS I have also obtained the Hijack this program so I can send a log if necessary.
 
did you try getting them in safe mode yet? And maybe it messed with your ActiveX install, could try reinstalling that

You may want to print out or make a copy of these instructions before starting, because you will not be able to connect to the internet during most of this fix.

Download smitRem.exe and save the file to your desktop.
Double click on the file to extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

Please download, install, and update the free version of Ewido Security Suite:
  1. When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".
  2. When you run Ewido for the first time, you will get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.
  3. From the main Ewido screen, click on update in the left menu, then click the Start update button.
  4. After the update finishes, the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful"
  5. Exit Ewido. DO NOT run a scan yet.

If you do not already have Ad-Aware SE 1.06 installed, follow these download and setup instructions. Also check for updates:

Again, do NOT run a scan yet.


Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
  1. Restart your computer
  2. After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
  3. Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
  4. Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

    Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen. Your desktop and icons will disappear and then reappear again --- this is normal.
    Wait for the tool to complete and Disk Cleanup to finish --- this may take a while; please be patient.

    Next, run Ad-aware and perform a full scan. Remove everything found.

    Now open Ewido Security Suite
    • Click on Scanner
    • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
    • If ewido finds anything, it will pop up a notification. Select "Remove" and "Perform action on all Infections" and "Create encrypted backup".
    • DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
    • When the scan is finished, click the Save report button at the bottom of the screen.
    • Save the report to your desktop
    • Close Ewido

    Next go to Start -> Control Panel, click Display -> Desktop -> Customize Desktop -> Web -> Uncheck "Security Info" if present.


    Restart your computer in normal mode.

    Run the Panda online virus scan at http://www.pandasoftware.com/products/activescan.htm

    - Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
    - A new window will open...click the Check Now button
    - Enter your Country
    - Enter your State/Province
    - Enter your e-mail address and click send
    - Select either Home User or Company
    - Click the big Scan Now button
    - If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
    - It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
    - When download is complete, click on Local Disks to start the scan
    - When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location.

    Finally, restart your computer once more, and please post a new HijackThis log as well as the log from the Ewido scan and the log from the smitRem tool, which will be located at C:\smitfiles.txt.

I managed to find the ewido scan, but unfortunately, this was the second one as I cleared the first by mistake.

I still am not able to download MS updates and the computer seems to be slower and non-responsive especially on start-up.

Now I have no audio, I have tried to to correct this problem going to controlpanel > audio devices and unchecking the mute box but to no avail. Also, when starting up this morning, after clicking on IE once, multiple IE windows (+/- 35) started opening up on their own and it was necessary to restart.
 
The audio's ok now - silly mistake - I had the mic plugged in the earphone jack.

I ran a scan in safe mode with AVG and it gave me the following two lines :

1/ partition table (MRB) reading error

2/ boot sector of disc C reading error

Any help appreciated.
 
Let's try Spysweeper.

Download the trial version of Spy Sweeper from Here

Install it using the Standard Install option. (You will be asked for your e-mail address, it is safe to give it. If you receive alerts from your firewall, allow all activities for Spy Sweeper)

You will be prompted to check for updated definitions, please do so.
(This may take several minutes)

Click on Options > Sweep Options and check Sweep all Folders on Selected drives. Check Local Disc C. Under What to Sweep, check every box.

Click on Sweep and allow it to fully scan your system.

When the sweep has finished, click Remove. Click Select All and then Next

Exit Spy Sweeper.

Restart your computer, and then post a new Hijackthis log.

Just tried windows update again, the following were unable to be downloaded :

The meassage I get is this : Updates were unable to be successfully installed.

Basically I go to MS update page though favorites in my IE browser ( allthough since I've had this problem I've visited their site by typing their URL),

The system checks my computer to see if I have the latest update software,

I'm offered express install or custom, I choose express.

A list of available updates apprears and I then click on install.

Its at this point that things seem to go wrong. The installing updates window apprears and nothing seems to happen (infact I've tried closing it and nothing happens, I just seems to crash in some way) , it just remains empty for a period of 10-15 minutes when the "Updates were unable to be successfully installed" message arrives together with a list of the failed updates.
