Help to review new build [First time]

Hi all,

Never built a gaming computer before and I am about to order the parts hopefully today. I just need to ask some experts if my build is good, or will even work :P

Here's what I got on my list of parts so far:

I have a fresh version of XP Pro SP3 to install so I don't need 7 or anything like that. Also need an optical drive. What do you guys think?

Do all these parts even work together??

Thanks,

Smernst :good:

i would probably get a case with a side window. show off those goodies! hard drive looks ok, but maybe spend that much on a better, smaller one, maybe only 200 GB or so. graphics card looks good. power supply should be good. RAM looks amazing. that is some insane speed there. not too familiar with intel cpu's but that one looks good. the only thing besides the case that i would change would be the motherboard. no pci-e 16x slot which isn't too important, but if you crossfire that hd 5850 with another one, you will lose some performance since they will only run at 8x which isn't major hit in performance, but you will lose some. it also seems a bit pricey. up to you on that though. i have never really "looked around" for dvd drives. just buy one that has a good speed like 22x or 24x. looks like a good build!

oh, and everything will work together. the motherboard supports the cpu and the gpu, the psu supports the motherboard, and the motherboard supports the RAM and its speed.

Should work, however, if this is for games an i5-750 will lose 1FPS on Crysis and the 5870 will gain 7 over the 5850. Therefor if you want a faster gaming computer save the $100 on the i7-860 and spend it on the 5870.

Get an ASUS P7P55D mobo for the same price, more options and not micro. The board you got is micro meaning short and has fewer ports to add onto. ASUS is a top brand.

If you are not good at sending in rebates get the Corsair 650tx over that PSU for the same pre-rebate price. Corair is a single rail.

Thanks for the quick replies. I will place my order probably today, maybe early tomorrow :)

So I should get a better, smaller hard drive.

How does this look? I really don't have an idea how to tell if it's better or not

Are you guys sure this won't need liquid cooling? I don't want my new Radeon to burn up on first use :P

you shouldn't need liquid cooling. build it and decide then.
i guess you really don't need a better hard drive the original one. i was sort of a hypocrite with that post. i have just an average one and actually don't really care much about hard drive performance :P you should be good with the first one.

Both of mine are stock ASUS 5870, why would they burn up? I just added a Noctua cooler and lowered my CPU temp by 15c on a load though.

I disagree. I think the HDD is fine. Why spend more money on a smaller hard drive?

^that. Caviar Blacks are an excellent series of HDDS. There isn't really anything I would change. Keep in mind though that the PSU that you picked out isn't modular (meaning that the cables won't come out) so all the cables that you don't use you will just have to hide them. Build quality is excellent though.

Thank you all for the help :) I am about to make my purchase, just wondering if there's anything else special that I need for my build? Is it ready to build as soon as it all arrives?

EDIT:

Ex. Sound cards, network adapters, special tools...

Sorry for my noobish level of understanding.

you could decide that you want different cables or something like that. i know i am looking to buy black sata cables and a black 24 pin motherboard cable extension so they are harder to see. other than just aesthetic things you want to change you should be fine.
