HELP>>Transferring files and folders 2 nu computer

I purchased a new E-Machine and would like to transfer all of my files and folders from my old computer (it does not have a brand name on it).. to my new computer. I have limited computer skill but get by okay. I know that the minds on this site are more than competent on the subject and I am confident that soon I will have step by step instructions on the procedure. Some of the items in my old computer are very important to me (music files, photos, documents etc....) and I would truly appreciate any help that y'all can give me. I believe the o/s in the old comp is windows ME. It has one CD drive and one floppy drive. The O/S in the new comp is windows XP. Can I simply plug them into eachother with specific cables and through certain steps transfer the info from old to new or is there much more involved and I am just being simple minded? Thankyou for any help you can give me..

If you like, you could just RAID the two drives together and not have to transfer anything. If you don't have a RAID controller you would have to buy one, though. That's what I would do.

Do NOT attempt to do this, it will delete all data on the drive. You can connect the two computers via a crossover cable, run the network setup wizard, share a folder, and transfer the files that way. Alternatively, you can take the hard drive out of your computer and plug it into your new computer (making sure that the jumpers are set correctly).
