During the installation for downloading windows xp service pack 2 i keep getting a message saying the file c:\windows\system32\cmd.exe is in use and stops me from downloading this. I have checked all applications on my pc and it will there are no applications in use.

Can someone please help

cmd.exe is the command prompt feature. Are any command prompt windows open? Of course, you would know but this is just to make sure. When you go into your task manager (CTRL+ALT+DEL), move over to the Processes tab. Do you see a file called "cmd.exe"? If you do, click on it and end task.

Additionally, are you doing this directly online or have you downloaded SP2 already? Assuming you are doing it online, try to get the downloadable version, reboot your pc and try again.

Are you trying to download and install direct from Microsoft or a 3rd party site? SP2 is available for a full download in a 266mb redistributable file. You can download and save the update to a folder for later installation by going to http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/OS-Enhancements/Windows-XP-SP2-RTM.shtml

The downloads of SP2 have been quite reliable from this site. I ought to know I've downloaded and burned enough copies to cd-rs to get people updated with it. Have you sweeped your system for any worms? You may want to read up on the Nimbda worm virus at http://www.thesitewizard.com/news/nimbdaworm.shtml One other thing you can try is disabling the svchost.exe in the task manager by itself to see if that helps.

I used that 266MB file as soon as I reinstalled XP w/SP1 back in August. Went without a single hitch! Way better than via Windows Update. Only thing is that I needed to use a download manager... 266MB all at once via dialup would have been a killer!

That's the drawback with dialup there unfortunately. When originally going to download the beta version of Vista Microsoft provided a downloader for that. The 2.5gb size of that would have been tied things up even dsl. The link there was an excellent one for SP2 even dialup. I've been able to see good working installations even though some were still on dialup. They keep a good site for other sownloads as well.
