Help w/ New PC Build

Hello, I am planning to build a PC from scratch I can use for most things, primarily gaming, like Skyrim, Farcry 3, MC, etc. Problem being I have no clue what to look for. I have looked at guides for this and I'm either stupid or haven't been trying hard enough, but I'm still confused.

Could you guys give me a shove in the right direction? I'm not asking you to do all the searching for me (though it'd be nice ;)), but just get me on track. My budget is around $700, and it would just be for gaming and some school work. Thanks

P.S. Sorry if I posted incorrectly or something, I'll do my best to change it :)

Welcome to the forum!

I've configured you a great little build, but it's 80 bucks over budget. :/ If you really cannot spend more than 700 bucks, then there are ways we can make this cheap. Just tell me what you think first. :)

It's $783 or thereabouts. If it's too expensive there are ways of making this build cheaper.

Do you already have a copy of Windows you can use?

Holy wish-I-could-swear! I am absolutely dumbfounded. I am really happy you were able to do this, but sadly, it does need to be slightly cheaper and I don't own a windows copy.:) This does look great, and I hate to ask for more, but I need also need a monitor (I can probably find this myself).

Does the monitor need to fall into the $700 budget too?

OK, if you replace the following parts, the price falls to $688

Get this GPU instead http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814121642

Get this case instead http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811235033

Get this PSU instead http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139027

Get this HDD instead http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822148840

Windows 7 Home x64 costs $100 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16832116986

I think it would be smart to go with AMD on this build.
Skyrim is very CPU friendly, and the i3-3220 is not a true quad core.

The i3 and it's board: $255 and the FX and it's board: $250.
The FX can easily be overclocked to 4.2GHz on all 6 cores on the stock cooler, the i3 cannot be OC'd at all.

Normally I tend to lean to Intel, but Skyrim is really CPU dependable. So is Minecraft as far as I know. In Far Cry 3 I don't think there's gonna be a difference, not if you overclock at least. (Really easy)

Otherwise I agree with Spirit.
But if it was me, building it for myself, I would personally buy the Corsair 200r ($55) case instead, and use the money saved on Kingston HyperX ($59) memory.
Only had good experience with that RAM (have around 64GB of it running in various PCs on a daily basis), and I like the 200r more.

Thank you guys so much! I also heard slickdeals.com is a good place for hard drive sales. Is there anything I should look for compatibility wise? And the monitor is iffy as far as budget goes. I'd like to find a fairly cheap one that works fine (doesn't everybody?) within budget as much as possible, but it doesn't have to strictly.

Edit: Whats the difference between the two hard drives and the two power supplies? Will it affect performance?
E2: Will I need to order SATA cables separately?
E3: also just found this:

Would you recommend it?

The Seagate drive is a 'bare drive' meaning it just comes with the drive itself in a box - no software or anything (not that you need any anyway). It makes it a bit cheaper to buy.

The difference between the PSUs is one is 500W and the other 600W. A 500W should be enough for a 7770.

The bundle you found there looks decent bar the case. Not a great case but oh well.

Also, the quad core variant of the processor brings my budget in range:

The same thing goes for the cheaper GPU you suggested. Will there be a huge performance difference depending on which one I buy?
Also again, the laptop I'm using now has a 500gb hard drive and I have used less than half of it. I found this hard drive because I feel like I don't need 1tb.

Would you recommend it? And I'm not using that case:

Get the FX-4300, much better.

Otherwise it's all good. :)

You want to make sure you get a 2GB 7770 if you can - most are 1GB.

One last thing
Here's the gpu I think I will use:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...-pr1c3grabb3r-_-Video+Cards-_-ASUS-_-14121642
as opposed to:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...bb3r-_-Video+Cards-_-Sapphire+Tech-_-14102999
And for the case, do sata cables come with it and is there a huge difference between USB 2.0 and 3.0? the case has usb 2.0, and i'm not sure if that will conflict with the motherboard
edit: how can I check to see if my monitor is compatible? Its an old viewsonic VE710b.
Edit2: I searched more, and whats the difference of motherboards between the UD3, the D3, and the DS3? The latter two are much cheaper.
e3: how much does the cache matter on the hard drive? the one I have picked out is 16mb
e4 (lotsa questions): do I need a video/sound card?

GPU looks good. There's only a difference between 2.0 and 3.0 if you have any 3.0 devices.

If your talking about the Gigabyte 970 UD3/D3/DS3. Get the UD3. The UD3 has a 8+2 power phase. Much better board then the other two.
