Help with a backup software

Hi, I am looking for a software for automated back-up of my laptop. I know, there are many out there, with excellent reviews; but i am looking for a program which can backup as the original files (i mean, not in a propreitary format). So, if my laptop has a folder named xyz, then that folder is backed up as "xyz". so, in case i have to restore only a part of the backup, I can easily do so.
Is it possible??? Any suggestions....??? Thanks.

I have not been backing up. I had tried some software in the past, but did not like the "image" type back up. ie... if I need to restore only few files or a part of a folder, then it was difficult to know which image has that portion. So, I am looking for some backup software which backs up without creating the image. Hope I am making myself clear..

most (if not all) backup programs will back everything up to a single file... however in the software you should be able to check the items you need to have restored. what programs have you used in the past?

try using windows backup should find it in start-programs-accessories-system tools

Which OS are you using?

If you don't care for the common ones, there are plenty of freeware utilities if you Google. You've got to audition to find the one that suits your purposes.

I quite like Dantz Retrospect, the lite version came with a WD External HDD I bought. It's a pig to figure out, very poor interface and terminology, but good thereafter. I looked at getting the full version but very expensive. I use that for large incremental backups.

For small, simple backups I use EZBack-it-up. Say you were working on some graphics and just wanted to backup those folders, you can create a task to do only those. I have 10 tasks I occasionally use.

What I have found missing from 99% of utilities is the ability to backup a folder or drive, with exceptions. Say you want to backup a folder, whatever its content, but not 5 files that are always there and you don't want backed up, most utilities will not allow that. Ditto for a complete drive with the exception of a few folders. I found one once but can't remember the name.
